Elmedia Player is a free video player for Mac that works with the majority of audio and video formats on the market. The player works with AVI, FLV, SWF, MP4, WMV, MOV, MP3, DAT, FLAC, M4V, MPG, DivX and MKV files.
It was developed by Eltima Software; who are the company behind Airy YouTube Downloader (which I recently reviewed). It has some great streaming features and support for subtitles too.
Let’s take a closer look at what this video player can do.
A Modern Video Player
One of the areas Elmedia Player excels is streaming. It supports streaming to Apple TV, Chromecast, smart TVs, and DLNA devices. 4K streaming is available and you stream videos with subtitles and create your own playlists and stream them.
The player also lets you stream videos from YouTube, DailyMotion, and Vimeo, without advertisements. Whilst I appreciate this will be popular with many users, as a YouTuber it is not something support as I already lose a lot of money from people who use YouTube with ad-blockers activated.
The player itself can be customised. You can adjust the size and font of text and modify background colours.
A host of subtitle formats are supported including SRT, ASS, SMIL, and more. If you do not have the subtitles for a video, you can search for it using a service such as OpenSubtitles directly within the player.
There are a lot of features built into the player to help you make watching videos more enjoyable.
As you would expect, videos can be viewed in full screen and you can change the playback speed, however you can also improve the picture by adjusting brightness, saturation, contrast, hue, gamma, sharpness, and noise. Video deinterlacing options are there too.
Interestingly, you can select any part of a video and set it to play continously over a loop. There is also an option to capture screenshots from videos.
Elmedia Player allows you to control volume directly from its own interface. It also has an audio equaliser and support for passthrough for hardware decoders and an option to fix videos that have audio that is out of sync.
Elmedia Player Pro
Elmedia Player is free to use, however a pro version is available that extends functionality.
The pro version retails from $19.95. Upgrading unlocks many cool advanced features.
This includes the ability to download videos and audio from YouTube, Metacafe, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Facebook, Yahoo, and more. Subtitles can be extracted from videos too.
Final Thoughts
There are a lot of video players on the market, however it is easy to see why Elmedia Player is so popular among Mac users and why it has received so many five star reviews.
Hopefully we will see the video player be made available to Windows and Linux users in the future too.
Good luck.
