I continue my interview series with Rise Forums members. Last week I interviewed developer Rhys Wynne. This week we speak to WordPress blogger Davesh Sharma.
Davesh has run a few blogs over the last few years, however he is probably best known for his great WordPress blog WPKube. The blog is updated every week with WordPress news, reviews and tutorials.
How did you get started in internet marketing?
I discovered internet marketing while I was learning to build hack email accounts. I was a member of a group on social community called orkut (it was very popular back in 2008), and I came across a make money online post, which later led me to create my very first website.
What was your first website?
My first website was Technshare, a multi-author blog on blogging tips. It got good traction and attracted a number of great writers.
But I later sold the site, mainly due to following reasons: a.) I wanted to work on new projects. b.) The site wasn’t doing well in terms of income.
You are known for running the WordPress blog WPKube. Why did you start a blog about the WordPress platform?
In 2010 I used to provide theme customization, web design, WordPress blog setup, and a whole bunch of other WordPress related services. After doing it for a while, I found myself working more and more with the platform, and that’s when I decided to start a WordPress niche blog.
What WordPress plugins and services can you not live without?
I use a lot of plugins and services, but to pick a few, I will say:
- WordPress SEO by Yoast – The most complete SEO plugin available for WordPress.
- Backup Buddy – It automatically backups your site to Dropbox or Amazon S3.
- Bufferapp – Allows me to schedule blog posts in advance, and helps me to get more exposure.
To find a complete list of plugins I use, you can see WPKube’s Blueprint.
How do you primarily make money online?
I make money through a number of sources, but my primary source is affiliate marketing. Most of the affiliate commission comes from linking within posts including product reviews, theme roundups, tutorials, etc.
Although, generating money through affiliate take time and efforts, but in the long run you can make a good of money, if done right.
I am also experimenting with BuySellAds; it is a nice source of side revenue.
Previously, I use to make money through services, it was a great source of income, but consumed a lot to my time.
What do you love most about working online?
That it gives you freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
What advice would you give to someone who is just looking to start working online?
Don’t wait, just go ahead and start –just try. You have nothing to lose here.
