Despite Google closing down Google Reader and people getting content updates through social media services such as Facebook and Twitter, I still believe RSS feed readers are the best way a blogger can stay up to date with the latest news.
Social media services tend to give you live updates of new articles, however feed readers allow you to check the latest content from hundreds of websites at a glance. It is a more practical way of scanning news and content from important websites, and is therefore an essential research tool for every blogger.
Online Feed Readers
Here is a list of some good online-based feed readers.
FeedBoosterAn interesting alternative to NetVibes. FeedBooster places more emphasis on images, and therefore has a unique magazine feel to it.
NetvibesI have been using NetVibes for years. It has a simple user-friendly interface and can be accessed from anywhere. Unfortunately, no dedicated mobile app is currently available for it.
NewsBlurA great looking RSS feed reader. 64 feeds can be viewed free; however, unlimited feeds only cost $1 per month. Dedicated apps for iPhone, iPad and Android can be downloaded too. |
Desktop Feed Readers
If you prefer to read RSS feeds from your desktop, I recommend trying:
AwasuA premium Windows RSS reader that allows you to filter feed items and keep multiple copies of the application synchronised with each other. A limited version of the client is available for free.
FeedDemonA popular RSS reader for Windows. It allows you to search feeds and you can automatically download podcasts and copy them to your MP3 player or phone.
Feed NotiferAn application that resides in your system tray or status bar and notifies you whenever new items arrive in your RSS feeds. It is available for Windows and Mac.
FeedReaderAn ad-free desktop RSS reader that is available for Windows and Linux.
GreatNewsA Windows RSS client that features automatic news highlighting and news labelling.
LifereaA beautiful Linux RSS reader that lets you read articles offline.

RSSOwlAn RSS client that features a built-in browser, keyword feeds, and labels. Available for Windows, Linux and Mac. |
Mobile Feed Readers
Checking your RSS feeds on the move is vital. Some good mobile readers include:
FeedlyA stylish RSS reader that is available for iPhone, iPad and Android. Extensions are available for all major browsers too.
The best looking RSS reader by far. Reading through Flipboard is a joy. Available on iOS and Android.
PulseAn application for reading news and RSS. It’s available for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Nook.
ReederA great looking RSS app that is available for iPhone, iPad and Mac. |
